Singapore (Dec. 31, 2008)

January 4, 2009

My brother extended an invitation to visit them and spend the New Year's break in Singapore with them.

December 31, 2008, we spent the morning in the Marina Area with the Merlion. We alighted at the elegant Fullerton Hotel. Then walked thru the underground walkway towards the Marina. We saw the beautiful and clean Merlion Park. The Merlion was bigger than how I remembered it more than 10 years ago. We saw the Giant Ferris Wheel, which is not functioning now due to a mechanical glitch that stalled it a few weeks back. This area will be the venue of the New Year's Party at midnight.

After picture taking, we walked across the bridge to the Esplanade, which will be home for Lea Salonga's "Cinderella" for the first 2 weeks of January.

The kids were quite exhausted by the heat that day so they needed to rest the rest of the afternoon. Elaine and I were able to sneak out to Orchard Road to visit the Forum (where the entire top floor was a huge Toy R Us!) and Wheelock Place (where they have a huge Borders).

That night, my brother and I took a long walk along Orchard Road, from Tanglin Rd. all the way to Robinsons/Crossings Mall and back, taking in all the sights and sounds of the malls there. I also tried one of those ice cream blocks at Sing$1 apiece. New Year's Eve here is quite quiet. I did not hear a single firecracker sound. If not for the decor, you would think this was just another ordinary night.
