The Great Wall of China at Mutianyu

October 26, 2008

The Great Wall of China is a true wonder of the world and an absolute must-see for any visitor to China. It snakes thousands of kilometers along the whole northerm frontier of the ancient Chinese empire. The origins of the Great Wall date back to the 7th century BC when Qin Shihuang unified China under the Qin Dynasty. His wall took ten years to complete. Subsequent dynasties contiued to build their own as the boundaries shifted in their reigns.

This is the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, known to be most picturesque and yet not too commercialized. The entrance is 40 yuan. You can ride up to the wall via cable car. And toboggan down a long slide that snakes down the mountain.

There were two cable car services. The one I took went up to Station 6. It was an open car, much like a ski lift. This was the same company that handles the slide down. So the ticket is round trip with this company.

There was another one that went up to Station 14, closed car, and more expensive. Many people went up this 2nd cable car, then hiked to Station 6 to take the slide down. But this was more expensive since one company owns the cable car, and another owned the slide. But it seemed easier to do it this way.

This would count as one of the most exciting days of my life, knowing that I am actually walking on one of the Wonders of the World!
